Modelling diapause termination and phenology of the Japanese beetle, Popillia japonica

چکیده

Abstract We deve?loped a mechanistic, stage-structured model simulating the phenology of Popillia japonica . The simulates influence soil temperature on larval diapause termination and development rate function post-overwintering larvae pupae. Model parameters are estimated based literature evidence for pupae parameterisation process that allows estimating (and related uncertainty) larvae. Data used validation refer to time-series adult trap catches collected during P. monitoring programme performed by Phytosanitary Service Lombardy Region within infested area in (Italy) from 2015 2019. A total 12 randomly selected locations estimate biologically realistic (parameterisation dataset). applied Jackknife nonparametric resampling procedure dataset quantify uncertainty associated with parameters’ estimates. Parameterised is then validated data referring different set (validation dataset) surveyed Lombardy. successfully predicted beginning emergence overall curve dataset. presented can support definition best timing implementation control activities local area-wide management

Cytochrome Oxidase Activity during Diapause and Metamorphosis of the Japanese Beetle (popillia Japonica Newman)

1. Determinations were made on the activity of cytochrome oxidase of individual Japanese beetles during growth, diapause, and metamorphosis. All readings were made on homogenates at a dilution of 1:1,000, except for adult beetles, when the final dilution was 1:10,000. 2. The activity of the enzyme increased during larval growth from a low value of 0.022 in the second instar, to high values rang...

Physical Contests for Females in the Japanese Beetle, Popillia japonica

Abstract We conducted field observations of physical competition for mates, in which a single male attempts to usurp a female from another male, in male Japanese beetles, Popillia japonica Newman (Coleoptera; Scarabaeidae). Physical contests for mates were relatively rare, but when they occurred the challenger male was able to successfully takeover females by dislodging the previously paired re...

Cytochrome Oxidase Activity during Diapause and Metamorphosis of the Japanese Beetle (popillia Japonica Newman)* by Daniel Ludwig

Bodine (1934) showed that the respiration of the preand postdiapanse egg of the grasshopper Melanoplus differentialis, is markedly inhibited by cyanide, whereas that of the diapanse egg is cyanide-insensitive. Allen (1940) studied cytochrome oxidase during the embryonic development of this insect and found that the concentration of this enzyme remains low throughout diapanse and the first part ...

The Spatial Distribution of the Japanese Beetle, Popillia japonica, in Soybean Fields

The Japanese beetle, Popillia japonica Newman (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), is a serious pest of many agricultural and horticultural plants. Relatively little research has investigated the distributions of Japanese beetles in agricultural fields, and this lack of information makes pest management more difficult. In the present study, the spatial distribution of Japanese beetles in soybean fields ...

Longevity and fecundity of Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica) on foliage grown under elevated carbon dioxide.

Atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide (CO(2)) have been increasing steadily over the last century. Plants grown under elevated CO(2) experience physiological changes that influence their suitability as food. Previous studies have found increased insect herbivory on plants grown under elevated CO(2). To determine effects of consuming foliage of soybean (Glycine max) grown under elevated CO(2) on ...
